Following the planned retirement of our long-standing Practice Manager, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Practice Manager to lead the practice into its next phase.
Salary
Location
Bridgwater, Somerset. Initially, the role will be based at the surgery, with scope to negotiate hybrid working and/or condensed hours over time.

Full-time, permanent. This is a pivotal leadership role with responsibility for the practice’s overall management, coordination, and performance. You will oversee all aspects of practice functionality, ensuring safe, effective, and financially sound operations while supporting staff and partners to deliver high-quality patient care. You do not need prior experience in CQC or in an NHS setting; the current Practice Manager will provide a full handover and onboarding. weeks’ annual leave plus statutory public holidays
The Role

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations:
- Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure the practice runs smoothly
- Motivate, support, and manage staff to achieve their responsibilities
- Promote team cohesion, effective communication, and continuous improvement
- Facilitate meetings and maintain action plans
People Management & HR:
- Overall responsibility for a team of approximately 37 staff
- Direct line management of:
- Reception Supervisor
- Deputy Practice Manager
- Lead Nurse
- IT Lead
- Finance Officer
- Shared responsibility for appraisals with the Reception Supervisor and Deputy Practice Manager
- Lead recruitment, contracts, appraisals, disciplinaries, and workforce planning
- Ensure compliance with employment law
Finance & Business Management:
- Manage budgets, forecasting, and financial record-keeping
- Oversee monthly payroll and pension submissions
- Liaise with accountants for year-end accounts
- Identify opportunities to maximise income and reduce expenditure
- Ensure QOF and commissioned service targets are met
- Prepare business cases for new services
- Profitability is the primary benchmark of success, reviewed annually with partners and accountants
Compliance, Governance & IT:
- Ensure ongoing compliance with NHS contractual requirements and CQC standards
- Oversee complaints, significant events, and risk management
- Maintain and update practice policies and procedures
- Manage IT systems and DSPT compliance
- Coordinate business continuity and practice development plans
Premises & External Relations:
- Manage estates, facilities, health and safety, and maintenance contracts
- Liaise with the Primary Care Network (PCN), commissioners, and external stakeholders
- Maintain accurate external communications and website information
- Support the Patient Participation Group (PPG)

The Requirements
The successful candidate will be an experienced manager with strong leadership and organisational skills, ideally with experience in:
- People management and leadership
- HR and employment processes
- Financial management and budgeting
- IT systems
- Premises and facilities management
- Knowledge of NHS compliance and CQC regulations is desirable but not essential.
